What is the Job Title?
The term “Travel Agent” is antiquated. In today’s industry you are known as a Travel Consultant, a Travel Professional, or a Travel Adviser.
What do I do?
At Gold Key Travel agency in LONGMONT, you are part of a team that sells high-end, high-value vacations. Families, friends, honeymoons, destination weddings, corporate incentive groups, singles, community groups … many types of high-end vacation getaways for many types of quality clients.
This is not a typical “sales person” job, however, because more than anything you are a Travel Concierge (there’s another title for you!) where you truly get to know what is best for your client based on their history, their personality, their wishes, their non-wishes, their needs, their budget, and the many factors that go into picking the perfect vacation. Simply put, this is a relationship business first and foremost.
Do I get to travel?
Of course! It’s extremely helpful to see a product first-hand before offering it to your clients. You will check out luxury hotels, cruise lines and tour companies across the globe. Granted, it’s not all glitz and glamour on these FAM trips (familiarization trips). They’re full of long days with lots of info to process. But hey, it could be worse :-)
#1 Work ethic. This is not a clock-in, clock-out, leave-everything-at-work type of position. Late nights can happen when clients or your team members need your assistance. January through April are especially busy.
#2 Team atmosphere. Working and collaborating with 10 other travel consultants is crucial to your success. Mutual respect, knowledge sharing, strong communication, and a “pull your weight” mentality has led to a wonderful bond between our staff.
#3 Organization and attention to detail, almost to an unhealthy level!! Just kidding, but in reality there is no hiding behind mistakes in this business. One missed letter or one missed number will snowball somebody's dream vacation very quickly. This is no easy task when you consider this job requires constant multi-tasking. Keeping calm, organized and focused with conversations and telephones buzzing through the air around you is a great challenge. If you find you’re easily frazzled or scatter brained, this job will not be enjoyable for you.
#4 Writing skills. No pulitzers or poetry needed, but clear and concise writing is important as 75% of your communication is via email. How you present information in writing to your client will determine much of your success and personal reputation.
#5 Project based. Each client and vacation booking is a project that's under your watch. You handle the many elements involved, including math and accounting. If you enjoy project-based jobs where you are in control of a client's "file", seeing it through from start to finish, you're on the right track!
#6 Technology. If you hate computers and wish they were never born, keep in mind you'll have two monitors at your desk with much toggling between both. You’ll be searching this pricing engine, emailing this client, inputting this spreadsheet, marking this calendar, and so on. You don't need to be a “techy” to do this job well, but you do need to learn new software and new tricks occasionally to help your efficiency.
#7 Finding joy and interest in other people's lives. If you love talking about yourself, but have little interest in asking questions and listening to other people, this will be the wrong job for you. Being a professional consultant and concierge to many customers, you'll want to have a love and interest in what they enjoy, what they need, and anticipating what will make them very happy.
#8 Customers are people, not dollar signs. Many sales positions preach money, money and money. While this position does involve selling high quality products and experiences, it's first and foremost a relationship business where you are looking out for the best interests of very good people in our community and across the USA.. What's best for the client is best for you, which sometimes means more money and sometimes means less.
#9 Reliable and Professional. In booking luxury vacation products, our customers expect us to dress and act the part. We’re not talking high society (after all, we Coloradans tend to be pretty laid back), but professional dress and professional disposition are part of our atmosphere.
#10 Loving travel. Whether you've traveled extensively or hardly at all, this is not crucial compared to the items above. You will get to travel in this job in order to experience what it is we're selling (keep in mind, though, 90% of your time is not spent traveling). But absolutely you must have a joy for travel to be properly educated, and of course enthused and happy for your clients to take their dream vacations!
